Abstract
This paper describes a system designed to improve network performanceand functionality in a way that is applicable from high-performancedistributed computing to wireless and mobile networking. Ourarchitecture captures the benefits of application-level routing whilebeing designed as a general-purpose network service. We call ourabstraction the Logistical Session Layer as it allows decisions abouta flow\'s path through the network to be made based on what can bethought of as network logistics. The \"session\" layer affords aconversation based on multiple transport-layer hops. We empiricallyexamine the performance implications of the \"cascaded\" TCPconnections that our approach facilitates.
