Assignment Overview

This class uses a mailing list as an important tool for communication between the instructor and the students. I use it to announce updates to the schedule, project coordination, and general information. The best way to make sure that everyone is on the mailing list is to make joining the list into an assignment.

NOTE: Only complete this assignment if you are definitely going to be in the class. I will be using this list to form project groups.

There is also a second objective here. When designing network protocols, it is critical to be as exact as possible. Furthermore, when implementing a protocol, it is critical to follow the directions to the letter. Therefore, the second objective is to make everyone aware (albeit with a relatively simple example), that following directions is critical!

Assignment Details

Homework #0 requires that you subscribe to the class mailing list by sending email to almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu with the word "subscribe 276" (lowercase, and without the quotes) in the subject line.

In the body of the email put the following information on a SINGLE line:

NOTE: Preserve spacing, i.e. make sure columns line up correctly.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
For example:

To: almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu
Subject: subscribe 276

almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu ALMEROTH,KEVIN CS PHD

To receive full credit, it is imperative that you follow directions EXACTLY. Be especially careful not to use MIME types, or include an HTML version of the email, or append a .signature file, etc.

At some point on Monday I will send email to the class mailing list to ensure that everyone who is signed up for the class is on the mailing list.
