• THERE IS NO REQUIRED TEXT FOR THIS COURSE. The main source of material will be papers. However, you should expect to use some of the following textbooks as supplemental material to help you understand the papers:
• Andrew S. Tanenbaum, Computer Networks, 3rd Edition.
• Kurose and Ross, Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet (http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~ross/book/Contents.htm).
• Christian Huitema, Routing in the Internet, 1st Edition.
• W. Richard Stevens, UNIX Network Programming, Networking APIs: Sockets and XTI, Volume 1, 2nd Edition.
• Deitel & Deitel, Java: How to Program, 2nd Edition.
• Douglas E. Comer, Internetworking with TCP/IP, 3rd Edition.
• Required Prerequisites
• Ideal: CS 176B--Network Computing
• Alternative: CS 176A--Introduction to Computer Communication Networks or equivalent.
• Minimum: Detailed understanding of network-based communication, necessary functions, and Internet protocol operation. Also, some level of network/system programming and programming skill/efficiency.

• Project design, demonstration, and final report.
• One possible emphasis: content delivery and seamless Netscape plug-in

• Less intensive, but same deliverables: project design, demonstration, and final report.

• Assignments and In-Class Presentation
• In-class presentation, 15%, 45 minutes (teams of two only)
• 3 assignments, 15% each (teams of two only--separate write-ups)
• HW1: Reliability on Top of UDP -- (due on April 26th)
• HW2: Experimenting with Packet Audio -- (due on May 17th)
• HW3: Application-layer multicasting -- (due on June 7th)
