CS 276 -- Distributed Computing and Computer Networks
Homework Assignment #0
Due (via Email) Before Class on Thursday, 1/21/99
Looking at the syllabus,
there are currently three topics scheduled to be covered this quarter.
There is room in the schedule for two to three additional topics. These
topics will be determined by the class. In addition to selecting the
topics, I would like help finding the best papers to represent these
topics. This is the purpose of this first assignment.
For this assignment, you will:
- Select two to three additional topics, similar in breadth and scope
to the topics which already appear on the
reading list
and syllabus.
- Find two to five quality overview references for these topics.
As a guide,
the best sources of papers typically come from the Association of
Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute for Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE). In these two societies, the best conferences, journals,
and magazines, related to networking, include:
- ACM Sigcomm
- ACM Computer Communications Review
- ACM Communications
- IEEE Infocom
- IEEE Communications
- IEEE Network
- ACM/IEEE Transactions on Networking
The references you find for a particular topic need not necessarily come
from one of these journals. This list is only meant to serve as a guide.
Furthermore, papers do not necessarily have to come from a purely networking
publication. For example, a good paper on networking might appear in
IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, in particular in a
special issue on Web Technologies (I'll have a paper appear in April 1999,
but any suggestion that just because a paper of mine appears justifies
the journal as being good is purely coincidence :-)
- When looking for papers, it would be helpful if you could also find
URLs for the papers. That way, I can copy them to the class account and
put URLs in the reading list.
What to turn in:
Send me email (almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu) with your list of topics, list
of papers, and URLs by January 21, 1999.
