DSL at VLDB 2013

Besides being in the beautiful Riva Del Garda, the DSL had a great time at this year's VLDB. Faisal presented the lab's paper "Low-Latency Multi-Datacenter Databases using Replicated Commit." Aaron, Divy, Amr, and Carlo Curino of Microsoft presented a two part tutorial title "Towards Database Virtualization for Database as a Service." The tutorial covered basics of virtualization, advances in process and storage elasticity, and recent topics in building a Database as a Service. The slides can be found on Aaron' home page.

Sudipto Das, with Microsoft researchers together, won the Best Paper Award at CIDR 2011

The paper entitled “Hyder — A Transactional Record Manager for Shared Flash”, co-authored by Ph.D. student Sudipto Das (with Philip Bernstein and Colin Reid at Microsoft), was given the Best Paper Award at the 5th Biennial Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR) 2011. Hyder is an incubation at Microsoft to create a high performance transactional database system that scales out without partitioning, by leveraging network-attached shared flash storage devices and high-speed data center networks. This paper presents an architectural overview of Hyder, details of its main components, and an analysis of its performance. Sudipto worked on this project as an intern in Summer 2010, contributing the performance analysis and various enhancements to the design.
