Graduate Student FAQ
greps@cs.ucsb.edu
This FAQ is specifically geared towards helping you, the graduate student, get your homepage on-line and visible, as well as possibly customizing the information that we publish in our graduate student list. A general FAQ for graduate students is available through the department. Eventually, the two pages should be merged.

More information concerning the facilities and software is also available. Finally, I'd recommend that new students check out the on-line tutorial.

Answers
Why isn't my homepage visible?
Typically this is because your homepage doesn't exist or isn't accessible. To create your homepage, please refer to Creating Your Own Web Page. Ensure that the permissions on your home directory and the public_html directories are at least go+rx (other read/execute for public access). Ensure that you do have a web page (index.html) and that it has world readable permissions (go+r). For convenience, we've made a script available (~greps/local/bin/cfg-mod) that will walk you through setting your permissions properly.
Why am I not on the Graduate Student List?
Although the list is generated automatically, the script runs only once a week on Sundays. If you're a new student, you will be included in the list the next time it is generated. If you are not a new student, then there may be a problem. In this case, please contact the webmaster and ask him/her to regenerate the list.
What if I don't want to be on the list?
Currently, you are not allowed to opt out of the list entirely. If you have a pressing reason why this should be allowed, please bring the issue up at the next GREPS meeting.
What if I want to change my information on the list?
You can customize the information that we dispay for you to some degree. Most of the information is gathered from your account and a link to your web page is listed only if an index.html was found in your public_html directory. The following scripts will allow you to change this information:
  • name - ~greps/local/bin/cfg-name
  • web page - ~greps/local/bin/cfg-url
Why aren't my changes taking effect?
Although the list is generated automatically, the script runs only once a week on Sundays. If you have recently created a new web page or have changed your personal information, those changes will take effect when the pages are regenerated.
