Research Experience

UCSB – Graduate Student Researcher (Advisor, Timothy Sherwood), July 2009 – Present

Implemented Android app and Python server that extracts and recognizes Turing machine diagrams from images of whiteboards, paper and chalkboards, and evaluated recognition accuracy given our novel algorithms (1)
Created novel taxonomy of sketch-recognition applications according to state-based semantics (3)
Designed and implemented a sketch recognition framework in Python to empower novice sketch application developers (5)
Examined reuse potential for current-generation smartphones in future classroom settings (4)

Citrix Online – Research Intern (Mentor, Florian Winterstein), September - December 2012

Implemented computer vision-based application prototype using OpenCV and C++
Collected test images and fine-tuned algorithm parameters to suit real world situations

Microsoft Research – Research Intern (Mentor, Bonshin Lee), June – August 2010

Implemented SketchVis, a sketch-based tool to explore large data sets through charts, using IronPython and .Net WPF (2)
Performed user studies with SketchVis during iterative design sessions

Gonzaga – Student Researcher (Advisor, Patricia Crowley), January 2007 – May 2008

Configured several MPI-based clusters, and evaluated cluster performance on phylogenetic inference algorithms
Designed reconfigurable OS on sensor networks as part of a team
Modified Linux kernel to insert fine-grain timing mechanisms
