Topics:

This course covers advanced topics on Internet search, information retrieval and web mining. Topics include search engines and ranking, web crawling and indexing, classification and clustering, user behavior analysis/recommendation, and scalable system/middleware support. We will also discuss industry experiences in building large-scale Internet search and mining systems, running on thousands of machines with petabytes of data at Ask.com .

Search and mining systems involve a variety of challenging topics spanning many areas in computer science, which cannot be covered in one quarter. The focus of presentations will be revised based on students' interests. For example,

• For students with more interests in systems, we discuss more on use of caching, fault tolerance/high performance design, distributed data stores and parallel processing.
• For students with more interests in algorithms and scientific computing, we discuss more in computational and statistical methods used in classification and ranking.

Expected work: Project and paper appraisal.
