Teaching Self and Prototype-Based Programming

Self's simple yet powerful object model makes it an ideal vehicle for introducing object concepts.

Several institutions have used Self in this capacity, to a variety of target audiences.

A group at Brown University has investigated Self as a medium for introductory programming courses. Their Web site contains a description of their course, intended to teach the teachers about OOP. There is also a report on their experiences. (To read this, and some other documents at Brown, you will need Adobe's Acrobat software.)
The PEVE Unit at the University of Manchester has run an introductory course on object concepts, using Self 3.0 as an explanatory medium. Notes for the course are available in PostScript (600Kb, uncompressed).
The Dept of Computing at Manchester Metropolitan University has been teaching Self as part of a Masters-level module on OOP. More information will be available on the course in Spring 1996. The contact for the course is Michael Fisher.
The Dept of Computer Science at The University of Aarhus is teaching Self as part of a course on prototype-based languages. Ole Lehrmann Madsen is the contact for this course.
There is a Self 4.0 tutorial and related slides available, serves as an introduction to the language and system.
