The Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara is pleased to share that Assistant Professor Murphy Niu is part of a multi-institutional team awarded a $2 million DARPA Grant through the Heterogeneous Architectures for Quantum (HARQ) Program.

Led by the University of Maryland, this highly competitive award supports research on next-generation quantum systems that integrate multiple types of quantum devices into a unified architecture. The goal is to move beyond single-platform designs and enable scalable, high-performance quantum computing and communication.

As part of the project, the UCSB team, led by Niu, will focus on developing cross-platform error correction protocols, a critical component for ensuring reliable operation across heterogeneous quantum systems. This work plays an essential role in enabling robust communication between quantum processing units.

The award will support ongoing research at UCSB, including funding for a postdoctoral researcher over the next three years.
