Dr. Xifeng Yan joined our department as an assistant professor. He
holds the Venkatesh Narayanamurti Chair in Computer Science. Dr. Yan
was a Research Staff Member at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center
between 2006 and 2008. He received a B.E. in computer science from
Zhejiang University, China in 1997 and a Ph.D. in computer science
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006.

His research interests include data mining, databases, and machine
learning, with emphasis on modeling, managing, and mining large-scale
graphs and networks in bioinformatics, social networks, the Web, and
computer systems. He is also working on social network analysis for
enterprise search and text mining. He has filed 6 patents and
published more than 40 papers in refereed journals and conferences,
including TODS, Bioinformatics, TSE, SIGMOD, SIGKDD, VLDB, FSE, and
ISMB. He gave tutorials in major data mining and database
conferences, including ICDM’05, ICDE’06, SIGKDD’06, and SIGKDD’08.
